Dartmouth is a former city located in the Halifax Regional Municipality and is now an urban community in the region. It is home to nearly 66,000 people. The British established Halifax in 1749 and quickly after began building fortifications at present day Dartmouth, Bedford, Lunenburg, and Lawrencetown to defend against French and Mi’kmaq raiding parties during the Father Le Loutre’s War. The community was named after after William Legge, who became the 1st Earl of Dartmouth. in 1955, the town was linked to Halifax through the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge which led to it growing rapidly over the next few years and becoming a city in 1961. The city was dissolved in 1996 when the Canadian government amalgamated into the Halifax Regional Municipality.
