The Towers Health & Racquets Club is a premier leisure facility in Bedford, UK. As part of a 2025 renovation, the facility required a retaining wall to reinforce a hillside adjacent to its property. The retaining wall stretches approximately 200 m. (650 ft.) long and reaches a maximum height of 1.5 m. (5 ft.). It runs directly behind the tennis courts, continues along the club and extends toward the rear parking area.

Remaining portions of the wall only needed two courses of standard blocks, 0.61 m. (4 ft.) high. The varying block sizes allowed for smooth step-down features and a more natural integration into the facility’s landscape.
The project engineer, Tailor Engineering, realized drainage was a critical design component given the hillside above the wall. Additional gravel was placed directly behind the wall, separated from backfill by filter fabric, to slow runoff velocity and protect the structure. The result was a fortified, engineered design that balances slope stabilization with natural looks, aligning perfectly with client’s vision.

Despite limited site access in areas, this project was completed in only a few weeks. Crews faced the challenge of maneuvering materials in narrow spaces where large machinery could not access and operate. This allowed crews to efficiently handle materials, lifting and placing blocks in tight access areas.
Construction was expedited by MagnumStone’s large block size, with each unit covering 0.74 sq. m. (8 sq. ft.) of facing. This reduced the number of blocks, minimized installation time and reduced truckload deliveries.
Gravel was placed inside each block’s hollow core to enhance drainage and wall mass. Additional drainage gravel and filter fabric were installed behind the wall’s upper sections, helping control water velocity from hillside runoff. The integration of gravity extenders efficiently reduced wall depth to fortify structural strength without deep excavation.
