MagnumStone Achieves Complex Wall Design
Fairfax County Animal Shelter used MagnumStone’s retaining wall system to complete a sophisticated project design for its loading dock area. Located behind the building, MagnumStone gravity walls were built to meet the architect’s design intent and the county’s engineering requirements. To create sufficient mass, the engineer designed the walls with redi-mix concrete in MagnumStone’s hollow core blocks. Further concrete was added at varying depths behind the walls to deliver a solution that met all of the county’s specifications.
Versatile Protection of MagnumStone Walls
Double-sided MagnumStone blocks were used for the top course of the main wall to provide a barrier/parapet application. The safety fence was installed directly into the hollow cores of the MagnumStone blocks to save space behind the wall. Custom caps were also manufactured for the main wall to deliver a clean, polished aesthetic. The contractor had to build inside and outside corners and various tangent angles to align with the approved site plans. The cheek walls for the steps proved to be quite challenging for this project. The wall batter had to be calculated and blocks needed to be sawcut on angles to accommodate the cast-in-place stairs.
This complex network of reinforced, angled walls provide access to the parking lot, loading dock and a protected area for the generator. The end result is a set of safe, structurally sound MagnumStone retaining walls for the animal shelter and its community.
